What Is a Character Counter?

A character counter tells you exactly how many characters are in a piece of text — letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation, and symbols each count as one character. Paste or type your text above and the count updates instantly.

It’s most useful any time you’re writing for a platform with a character limit — social media posts, ad copy, meta descriptions, SMS messages, and email subject lines all have specific limits you can’t exceed. A character counter keeps you on the right side of those limits before you hit publish or send.

Word Timer’s character counter is free, works in real time, and shows both characters with spaces and characters without spaces — because different platforms measure differently.

Character Limits for Every Major Platform

Knowing your platform’s limit before you write saves you the frustration of getting cut off or rejected. Here are the character limits that matter most:

Characters With Spaces vs. Without Spaces

The counter shows both numbers because platforms measure differently:

Characters with spaces is the most common measurement. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and most social platforms count every space as a character. This is usually the number you need.

Characters without spaces is used by some academic and publishing formats that measure text density. It’s also useful for comparing raw text volume when spaces aren’t meaningful.

When in doubt, use the “with spaces” count — it’s the standard for most digital platforms.

What Counts as a Character?

Every single text unit counts as one character:

  • Letters (a–z, A–Z) — each one is 1 character
  • Numbers (0–9) — each one is 1 character
  • Spaces — 1 character each
  • Punctuation (., !, ?, :, ;, etc.) — 1 character each
  • Symbols (&, @, #, %, etc.) — 1 character each
  • Emoji — typically 2 characters each due to unicode encoding

Emoji are worth watching on platforms with tight limits. What looks like one small image in your text is actually 2 characters in most platforms’ counting system. If you’re close to a limit, a few emoji can push you over unexpectedly.

Line breaks (pressing Enter) also count as 1 character on most platforms.

Tips for Writing Within Character Limits

Write first, then trim. Don’t constrain yourself while drafting. Write what you want to say, check the count with the tool above, then cut from there. Cutting is easier than trying to add meaning to an already-thin draft.

Know the display limit, not just the technical limit. Instagram technically allows 2,200 characters, but only the first 125 display without clicking “more.” Your hook must land in those 125 visible characters. The character counter helps you check both.

Front-load for ads. Google and Meta ad headlines are 30–40 characters each — barely a sentence. Put your most compelling word first because there’s no room to warm up.

Count your emoji separately. Since most emoji are 2 characters, mentally add 1 extra character per emoji when estimating how close you are to a limit.

For email subject lines, think mobile first. Mobile email clients typically show 30–40 characters before truncating. Even though most platforms allow up to 60–70, aim for under 45 if mobile open rates matter to you.

Why Character Count Matters for SEO

Two SEO elements live and die by character count:

Meta titles display in search results and browser tabs. Google typically shows 50–60 characters before cutting off. A title that runs too long gets truncated mid-word in search results — damaging the click-through impression. Keep titles between 50 and 60 characters.

Meta descriptions appear as the snippet under your page title in search results. Google shows roughly 150–160 characters. A description that runs longer gets cut off with “…” — wasting the opportunity to give searchers a compelling reason to click. Use the character counter to hit that window precisely.

Both elements are written in your WordPress SEO plugin (Yoast, RankMath, etc.) — paste each one into the character counter first to confirm the length before saving.
