What Does the Alphabetize Tool Do?

The Alphabetize Tool takes any list of words, names, or items and sorts them into alphabetical order instantly. Paste your list, choose A–Z or Z–A, pick your separator, and click Sort. Done in under three seconds.

It works for any kind of list: names, keywords, titles, tags, ingredients, product names, references — anything where you need consistent alphabetical ordering and don’t want to do it by hand.

Word Timer’s alphabetizer is completely free. No account needed. No limits on list length.

How to Use the Alphabetize Tool

Step 1: Paste your list. Put one item per line in the text box above, or separate items with commas or spaces depending on how your list is formatted.

Step 2: Choose your separator. Tell the tool how your items are separated — by line break, comma, or space. This makes sure the tool treats each item correctly instead of splitting on the wrong character.

Step 3: Pick your sort order. Choose A–Z for standard ascending order, or Z–A for reverse alphabetical.

Step 4: Click Sort. Your sorted list appears instantly in the output box. Copy it and use it wherever you need.

When You Need an Alphabetizer

Bibliographies and reference lists. APA, MLA, and Chicago style all require reference lists to be sorted alphabetically by the author’s last name. Sorting 20, 30, or 50 references by hand is tedious and error-prone. Paste them all in and sort them in seconds.

Keyword lists for SEO. When you’re working with a large keyword research export, alphabetical sorting helps you spot clusters — all the “script timer” variations together, all the “word counter” terms grouped, and so on. Much easier than scanning a random list.

Content tags and categories. Blogs, online stores, and documentation sites all benefit from alphabetically ordered tags for navigation. Sort your full tag list in one go before uploading.

Student rosters and name lists. Teachers, coaches, and event organizers regularly need names in alphabetical order. Paste the full list and sort — no spreadsheet required.

Glossaries and indexes. Any reference document where readers scan for a specific term relies on alphabetical order. Build your glossary alphabetically from the start.

Product catalogs and inventory. E-commerce managers and catalog editors use alphabetical sorting to organize product names, SKUs, and categories for consistent display.

Alphabetizing Rules You Should Know

Ignore leading articles in titles. When alphabetizing book titles, film names, or song titles, drop “The,” “A,” and “An” from the beginning. The Great Gatsby files under G, not T. Most style guides — including APA, MLA, and Chicago — follow this rule.

Last name first for people. Bibliographies and directories list people as Last, First. “Smith, John” comes before “Wilson, Anna.” Format your names this way before pasting if you need person-name sorting.

Numbers come before letters. Items beginning with numerals sort before alphabetical entries in most conventions. Numbers sort in numerical order — 2, 10, 20 — not alphabetical order (which would put 10 before 2).

Hyphens and case don’t change the sort. Alphabetizing is case-insensitive — uppercase and lowercase letters are treated identically. Hyphens are generally ignored or treated as spaces depending on the style guide.

When first letters match, go to the second. If multiple items start with the same letter, compare the second letter to determine order. Keep going letter by letter until you find a difference.

Alphabetizer vs. Sorting in Other Tools

Microsoft Word: Home → Sort button (the AZ icon in the Paragraph section). Good for documents you’re already working in.

Google Sheets / Excel: Data → Sort. Best for data that’s already in a spreadsheet column.

Word Timer’s Alphabetizer: Fastest for raw text lists that aren’t in a spreadsheet or document. No formatting, no file upload — just paste and sort. Especially useful for keyword lists, bibliography entries, and tag lists you’re copying between tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I alphabetize a list online for free? Paste your list into Word Timer’s Alphabetize Tool above, choose your separator and sort order, and click Sort. It’s free, instant, and requires no login.

What is the correct way to alphabetize names? For people’s names in bibliographies and directories, list them last name first (Smith, John) and sort by last name. For titles, ignore leading articles (the, a, an) and sort by the first significant word.

Can I sort a list from Z to A instead of A to Z? Yes — the Alphabetize Tool supports both ascending (A–Z) and descending (Z–A) sort order. Select Z–A before clicking Sort.

Do numbers come before or after letters when alphabetizing? Numerals typically sort before letters in standard conventions. Numbers sort in numerical value order, not alphabetical character order.

Can I alphabetize a list with commas instead of line breaks? Yes. Choose “Comma” as your separator before sorting and the tool will correctly treat each comma-separated item as its own entry.

How long can my list be? There’s no enforced limit. The tool handles lists of any practical length — whether that’s 10 items or 10,000.

Does the alphabetizer keep my data private? Yes. Your text is processed entirely in your browser and is never sent to or stored on any server. Close the tab and your data is gone.
