Characters With Spaces vs. Without Spaces
The counter shows both numbers because platforms measure differently:
Characters with spaces is the most common measurement. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and most social platforms count every space as a character. This is usually the number you need.
Characters without spaces is used by some academic and publishing formats that measure text density. It’s also useful for comparing raw text volume when spaces aren’t meaningful.
When in doubt, use the “with spaces” count — it’s the standard for most digital platforms.
What Counts as a Character?
Every single text unit counts as one character:
- Letters (a–z, A–Z) — each one is 1 character
- Numbers (0–9) — each one is 1 character
- Spaces — 1 character each

Emoji are worth watching on platforms with tight limits. What looks like one small image in your text is actually 2 characters in most platforms’ counting system. If you’re close to a limit, a few emoji can push you over unexpectedly.
Line breaks (pressing Enter) also count as 1 character on most platforms.
Tips for Writing Within Character Limits
Write first, then trim. Don’t constrain yourself while drafting. Write what you want to say, check the count with the tool above, then cut from there. Cutting is easier than trying to add meaning to an already-thin draft.
Know the display limit, not just the technical limit. Instagram technically allows 2,200 characters, but only the first 125 display without clicking “more.” Your hook must land in those 125 visible characters. The character counter helps you check both.
Front-load for ads. Google and Meta ad headlines are 30–40 characters each — barely a sentence. Put your most compelling word first because there’s no room to warm up.
